Legislative Advocacy
The Western Boaters Safety Group was created by a group of experienced boaters that recognized the importance of an innovative group to meet the needs and to represent the interest of the boating community. It was originally organized to provide a presence at the state legislative level to influence and to introduce legislation that would enhance and protect the boating community. WBSG continues to recognize that important mission, but it has also expanded to fill a much broader role. WBSG now provides significant safety and educational materials for the boat owner. Joining WBSG will provide you with a boatload of information and benefits that will continue to pay dividends throughout the year. Join with other leading boat operators that have taken advantage of this opportunity.

Legislative Advocacy
Western Boaters Safety Group retains the services of legislative advocates in Sacramento. Our advocates have been involved with a number of issues, ranging from to providing for PWC exemptions, boat operator licensing, reformulated fuels, to commercial licensing, and regional and State authorities.

Our advocates review over 4,000 separate pieces of legislation each year. Without such representation, paid by WBSG membership dues, we could not protect our interests from a myriad of groups seeking to limit, and in some cases, destroy recreational boating.

SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Past accomplishments of the WBSG include the following:
1. Saving Department of Boating and Waterways and keeping the private marina loan program intact.
2. Rescinding a number of new regulations before they became laws which were detrimental to the community.
3. Fought against the complete ban of 2-stroke engines on Lake Tahoe, and then sought a resolution allowing 4-stroke engines on the lake.
4. Prevented $15 million from the Harbors and Watercraft Revolving Fund used for boating from being raided to pay for energy.
5. Lobbied for the state to recognize June 10th through June 16th as Merchant Marine Remembrance Week.
6. Lobbied for environmental quality for solid waste management.
7. Support for salmon and steelhead trout conservation and restoration.
8. Support for law that would make it a crime to report false boating emergencies.
9. Fought against the complete ban of PWC’s on Lake Mead.
10. Fought and won against AB 2439 that would prohibit the use of 2-stroke engines over 10 horsepower on any waters of the state connected to or used as a domestic water supply. That would ban two-stroke engines on Folsom Lake because it flows into the American River which is a "drinking water source" used by the Arcade Water District in Sacramento. There are approximately 120 bodies of water that would be included in the two-stroke engine ban.
11. Support for the month of May as California Marine Transportation System Month.
12. Support for new law that mandates any person convicted of a moving boat violation to attend a boating safety class.
